What the evidence says
A 2021 review of three trials in older adults (151 people) pooled two of them (55 people) and found magnesium shortened time to fall asleep by about 17 minutes; the authors rated the evidence low to very low. A 2025 trial of magnesium bisglycinate found a modest improvement in insomnia severity.
